Repetition becomes an attitude, not information

A song can repeat one line without becoming dull because each return asks us to believe it with a different feeling.

In Brief

Repetition can become the way a listener’s emotion stays, rather than an empty space in songwriting.

The same line, a different temperature

The first repetition gives information. The second makes familiarity. After that, the important question is which expression the line returns with.

Small changes—removing an instrument, changing the vocal distance, briefly stopping the drums—turn repetition into an attitude.
